Guidance for Hybrid and Remote Learning
Positive Cases and Quarantine
We know how important it is to keep our schools and classrooms open for learning, and we have done everything we can to make sure our classrooms are equipped to be safe learning environments, including mandating that all staff are vaccinated and ensuring increased ventilation in all school buildings and classrooms. These measures will mean fewer disruptions in your child’s education. There may be times when your child is asked to quarantine due to exposure to COVID-19. Here are the quarantine protocols for students:
Shortened Quarantine for COVID-19 Exposure
The quarantine period for students exposed to COVID-19 has been shortened. Students in K-12 will continue to use home test kits to stay in school after an in-school exposure.
- If your child is NOT fully vaccinated and was exposed to COVID-19 outside of a school setting, your child must quarantine for at least 5 days; this is reduced from 10 days.
- If your child is fully vaccinated and was exposed outside of school, your child can continue to attend school so long as they do not have any symptoms.
- All students are required to wear masks while on school grounds, and students who were exposed must wear a well-fitting mask such as a KN95, KF94, or a cloth mask over a disposable surgical mask on Days 6–10.
Children who are at least 2 years old in LYFE, 3-K, and Pre-K only need to quarantine for five days if they are symptom-free, have a negative test, and are able to wear a well-fitting mask through Day 10. This has been shortened from ten days.
- These children must have a negative COVID-19 test from a health care provider on Day 5 OR two negative home test results from Day 4 and Day 5.
Children under 2 years old in LYFE must still quarantine for up to ten days. There is no change in this policy.
- These children can return to school on Day 8 if they are symptom-free and have a negative COVID-19 test from a health care provider on Day 5 or later. Home tests are not considered valid for this age group unless administered at the direction of a health care provider.
Any child in a LYFE, 3-K, or Pre-K classroom that was exposed but does NOT get tested for COVID-19 can return after completing a 10-day quarantine.
Remote Learning Expectations
Any student who tests positive for COVID-19 and is isolating at home is entitled to asynchronous remote instruction and access to office hours with a teacher based on availability. Your school will provide details about how children in those circumstances can access remote instruction and office hours.
-
Students and families should check Google Classroom daily for important updates from their teachers.
-
At-home assignments for each week should be turned in to the teacher.
Technology: Getting a Device and Internet Access
We are committed to making sure that all students can successfully connect to online learning during their at-home learning days.
- If your student needs a laptop or tablet, fill out the Device Request Form to reserve your device. Borrowing a device is free! Students in grades K - 3 will receive tablets and students in grades 4-5 will receive laptops.
- Borrowed devices should be used for school purposes only and kept in a secure location. Take your device with you on in-school days.
- If you are using your own device, make sure it meets the technology requirements for online learning.
- If you do not have internet access at home, LOCAL INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER is providing free connection for families earning less than $50,000 per year with students learning at home. You can request free internet access directly with the company.
- If you have a DOE issued Device - Your child’s iPad is now a hotspot that allows you to connect other devices used for remote learning to the internet.
- If you are not able to get internet hooked up in your home, your child's teacher will work with you to provide alternative offline assignments.
- If you are having trouble connecting to Google Classroom, Zoom, or any of our online learning resources, contact the school's Parent Coordinator...
Tips for Successful At-Home Learning
At-home learning will look different than a typical school day. The amount of time your child should be expected to engage in learning activities will vary by age and grade level. The expectations below are guidelines. If your child is not able to complete at-home learning assignments within the time periods recommended below, contact your child's teacher to discuss a modified assignment load.
- Make sure your child has a quiet place to work (ideally a desk or table) and the school supplies they need. Try to remove distractions like the television or other technology not needed for learning.
- For grades K-2, expect your child to work up to 2 hours per day, broken up into sessions of no more than 30 minutes.
- For grades 3-5, expect your child to work up to 4 hours per day, broken up into sessions of no more than one hour.
- Your child may benefit from focusing on a limited number of subjects each day. For example, If they are working at home Monday-Wednesday-Friday, they may want to work on science and math on Mondays, Social Studies and English Language Arts on Wednesday, and use Fridays to catch up on any assignments not yet completed.
Getting your Device Ready for Back to School
For anyone who has a DOE-loaned ipad, we have some important updates for you. It is essential that you take the actions here to ensure your child’s ipad is ready for use for return to school. The first day of school is only a few weeks away, and all students will be working remotely for at least a few days a week. Your child will need their ipad to be ready for learning for the fall. Please note that when we have other updates, we will send messages to you and your iPad on Thursdays, and we will let your schools know about the updates.
